How refuge access hours work

How refuge access hours work

Trails at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge are open daily from sunrise to sundown. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages the refuge, established in 1972 to protect Tinicum Marsh, Pennsylvania’s largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh.

Gate schedules change through the year: November–March, 6 am–6 pm; March–May, 6 am–8 pm; May–September, 6 am–9 pm; September–October, 6 am–8 pm; and October–November, 6 am–7 pm. The refuge advises visitors to follow the hours posted at entrance gates. Since the gate shuts automatically at closing time and stays closed until morning, plan to leave before the posted time.

The center closes on federal holidays, but trails remain open. Check the official site before you go.

Opening hours

  • Monday to Sunday: 6 AM–7 PM

Last checked November 2026. Hours can change on holidays and for special events.

Which entrance should you use?

Which entrance should you use?

Choose the Lindbergh Boulevard entrance for the Visitor Center and observation features, or Route 420 for access to trails and fishing areas.

The eastern entrance is at 86th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard in Southwest Philadelphia. It serves the Visitor Center, trails, fishing access points and wildlife observation structures. The western entrance is on Route 420, just north of I-95, with access to trails and fishing access. Both entrances have free parking.

SEPTA routes 37 and 108 serve 84th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard, about 0.5 miles from the Visitor Center. The Airport Line stops at Eastwick Station, about 1 mile from the center. If you’re driving, use designated parking areas.

The Visitor Center has maps, brochures, birding checklists and restrooms. You can borrow binoculars and fishing rods free of charge, but food is not available for purchase. Outdoor bathrooms are by the trailhead and observation tower, and an outdoor water fountain is beside the Visitor Center parking lot.

Seasonal closures and access alerts

Seasonal closures and access alerts

Trail access can change because of weather, maintenance or refuge-wide closures, so check for alerts before setting out.

The refuge follows Philadelphia’s closing schedule during severe weather. Its main page also reports that the boat launch is inaccessible. Follow designated trails, keep pets on a leash no longer than six feet, and use bicycles only on designated service roads.

For a wider overview of trails and wildlife facilities, the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge visitor guide covers what to see and do across the refuge.

If you plan to fish, designated areas require a Pennsylvania fishing license; the refuge’s guidance says anyone age 16 or older needs one.

Plan a visit from Essington

Plan a visit from Essington

From Essington, allow about 7 minutes to drive from Waterfront Inn PHL Airport to the refuge. At the entrance, check the posted gate closing time, then choose a trail that fits your available time.

The refuge has more than 10 miles of trails. The Wetland Loop is 3.5 miles, while the Big Boardwalk Loop is less than 1 mile and wheelchair accessible. Stay on designated trails, and leave enough time to return before the gate closes.

Before you go: Hours and access can change, especially during severe weather or restoration work. Check the official site before you go, and follow any notices at the entrance.
